STSM - Short Term Scientific Missions

COSTNET welcomes applications for Short Term Scientific Missions (STSMs) for junior and senior researchers to visit fellow COSTNET participants. The upcoming deadlines for applications (for missions completed before 30 April 2020) are:

  1. 31 May 2019
  2. 31 October 2019
  3. 31 January 2020
  4. 30 June 2020

Note: get in touch with the STSM coordinator, Dr. Veronica Vinciotti (veronica.vinciotti@brunel.ac.uk), for the possibility of applications outside these dates.

The rules for the STSMs

  1. Who can apply and with whom: both members of the mission should be signed up with COST and they should be a member of one of the countries that have accepted our Action. Note that the applicant and host should be in different countries.
  2. Budget: Up to a max of EUR 2000 for a mission between 5 and 90 days.
  3. Application: The person travelling should follow the following steps carefully:
    1. Prepare a full CV (including a list of academic publications).
    2. Obtain an invitation letter from the senior researcher of the host institution.
    3. Obtain a support letter from the home institution.
    4. Fill out the online form. Please include in your application clear and concrete deliverables (e.g. an arXiv paper?) and upload CV and letters.
    5. After the approval of the STSM, you will receive a formal Grant Notification Letter from the Grant Holder.
  4. After the mission: Upon completion of the mission, you are required to provide the following documents (note: no receipts of expenses are required):
    1. A scientific report (max. 2 pages) summarizing the results of the scientific mission and future plans. Upload the report file to e-COST and send a copy to the STSM coordinator, Dr. Veronica Vinciotti (veronica.vinciotti@brunel.ac.uk).
    2. A letter from a senior researcher affiliated to the host institution formally accepting the scientific report. Upload the letter to e-COST.
    3. After the approval of the final report, you will receive a confirmation email and reimbursement.

During your stay, don't forget to update us on your experience using the #COSTNET handle on Twitter!

And once your paper is ready, don't forget to include COSTNET in the acknowledgement of the paper (for example: “The project was partially supported by the “European Cooperation in Science & Technology” (COST): Action CA15109”).
